Breast Reduction
(Reduction Mammoplasty)
Breast reduction is for patients with large
breasts, who experience a significant range of
symptoms such as significant neck and shoulder
pain, who have difficulty in wearing clothes, who
find that the heaviness of their breasts
interferes with sports activities, and who may
develop pain from the weight of the bra straps.
Some symptoms are severe enough to interfere with
activities of daily living.
| There are
different techniques for breast
reduction. These can be based on the
pedicle (blood supply) like superior,
central, inferior, lateral, bipedicles;
and in the incision in the skin like
inverted T, vertical, periareolar or like
a J. Your plastic surgeon will address
the pro and contra-indication of each
technique with regards to your specific
situation. The only real
contra-indication to breast reduction
surgery is if the patient is not
medically able to undergo the surgery.
Smoking can affect wound healing. The
possibility of loss of nipple sensation
exists but is uncommon with a good
technique. If loss of nipple sensation
does occur, it usually improves over the
course of the year or so following
surgery.
Patients
who undergo reduction mammoplasty are in
general the happiest patients followed by
a plastic surgeon. They tend to have
immediate relief of their symptoms.
