Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a disorder in which endometrial
tissue detaches itself from the lining of the
uterus and deposits itself throughout the pelvic
area in places where it should not be. Because
these endometrial islands are as subject as the
endometrium to hormonal stimulation, they also
tend to bleed during menstruation. Because this
blood from the implants has nowhere to flow, the
body builds up scar tissue around this
accumulated blood, finally developing
blood-filled pockets on the affected organ.
Endometriosis develops slowly and occurs most
frequently in women between the ages of 30 and
40, especially those who have postponed
pregnancy. As a result, the disorder is often
seen in well-educated, career-oriented women.
SYMPTOMS
- Sever pain
and discomfort during menstrual period,
during intercourse, and during bowel
movements
- Irregular and
unusually heavy menstrual flow
- Infertility
TREATMENT
The
goal of treatment is to halt the condition,
reduce pain, and restore normal menstruation and
fertility.
- Drug Therapy,
to modify the bodys natural
hormonal secretions in order to halt
menstruation for a while to permit the
endometrial implants to shrink.
- Hysterectomy,
thereby removing the uterus, and
sometimes the tubes and the ovaries. This
surgical procedure is sometimes necessary
to eliminate the pain and discomfort.
